Introductions to the Works
The factors that determine the development of our personalities and identities are multifaceted and complex. Memories of the past figure prominently here. Peter Uka’s paintings illustrate such memories of events, people, colours and shapes - the formative moments of one’s own life. They connect two continents and countries that, in their own way, are both home for the artist. Born in 1975 in Nigeria’s Benue state, which is named after the eponymous river - the "Mother of Waters" -, his oil paintings have been created in the lowlands of "Father Rhine" by whose banks the artist has lived since 2007.  The connecting links here were the Yaba College of Technology in the metropolis of Lagos and the Kunstakademie (Art Academy) in Düsseldorf where he studied under the professors Tal R and Eberhard Havekost, in whose class he completed his studies in 2017 as a Meisterschüler (master student).

Iwajla Klinke / Ritual Memories

With a cast of colorful characters who would do justice to any repertory stage, Iwajla Klinke infuses portrait photography with the magic and elegance of its early years, when one of its primary goals was to document and celebrate ritual moments in an individual’s life. Her camera records subjects whose very clothing points to individuality, even to eccentricity, and where ritual is implicit. All are presented in a formal manner that sometimes recalls the conventions of the painted portrait. These three-quarter studies, with a neutral background of black or brown, use natural light to create sepia-like effects strikingly reminiscent of a Vermeer painting. Yet what also seems to radiate here is an inner light, a kind of epiphany deeply rooted in rituals whose origins may well have been forgotten but whose spiritual energy persists.

Excerpted from David Galloway’s essay “Ritual Memories,” from the catalogue of the same title published by Gallery Voss (2014).

Artist Statement

FACELESS MINORITY, this a theme I choose after my rst wrap face painting. A faceless person does not have a
voice, so I am using my painting as a mouth piece to propagate a cause. I portray a situation by using a very popular
fabric that is known to a region to discuss either the social cultural or political situation of that region. My painting
titled “one of the girls “is a prime example of the political unrest in the northern part of Nigeria, where girls were
adopted from schools by the notorious terrorist group (boko haram). My subject could also be cultural, where
fashion and social cultural topics are being visited.
''IRI NI SI'' which literarily means portray or appearance was also chosen because your appearance and the way
you look may decide what people think of you. The way you portray or present yourself goes a long way in how
people treat and respect you. My portrait is meant to engage the audience in an intellectual discussion and not just
the aesthetic values. My paintings could be conceptual and also realistic at the same time. Several fabric are used,
which could be trace back to my root (Africa), some face are wrapped with some country ags, this is a way I
discuss the problem in a particular country or region. I was once a fashion designer while I was in Nigeria, this plays
a big role for my love for fabric, style and design. Photography is also being introduced to my painting, most of the
subject look like a model posing for a photoshoot.
