Chen Jun

Born in Yueyang , Hunan province in 1977 He graduated from the Department of Traditional Chinese Painting of Sichuan Academy of Fine Arts in 2002 with a bachelor’s degree. He graduated from Hu Wei Comprehensive Materials Studio of National Academy of Painting in 2018.Now working and living in Xiamen, Beijing, freelance painter.

Borders are redefined in this globalized and networked age. The boundary of Culture and art have been breached. As an art form and culture value, ink painting cannot be confined to a regional monolingual state. What we are facing in this age is not only our own traditions but also the multiculture of globalization. Ink painting plays an important role in the process of internationalization and contemporary transformation. The uniqueness of ink art is also the specific identity of Chinese artists in the international context. Traditional ink painting has been lost in the present context. Our own tradition’s re-understanding about the ink art should be with a new aesthetic vision and the concept of the times should be integrated into the thinking of contemporary culture, and then realize traditional ink’s transformation in contemporary world. To find an effective art form in the contemporary context, and participate in the extensive international cultural exchanges with a different ethnic identity. At the intersection of eastern and Western cultures, we need rethink the possibility of ‘recreate’ of ink painting in contemporary.

‘Re-create‛ is not repeat but overturn, It is to re-explore and re-learn and re-create the traditional culture in the current cultural background.

Zhang Ruo

Zhang Ruo(Zhang Qiang) was born in Hefei Province in 1982. After graduating from Hebei Normal University in 2006, he started his own studio in Beijing in 2011. He has won various prizes for his delicate works of art, including the ’12th Asian Carving Competition in Dagen’ and in 2017 Art Nova’s certificate for the best artist.

He has participated in several groups and solo exhibitions in China; Hong Kong; Japan and Germany.

The series ‘Animal Master’  consisting of various animals that are on the back of a piece of furniture. Inspired by an old dirty stool he saw on a market and which reminded him of his early childhood. A story of his mother at the time of the cultural revolution in China. The intellectuals from his mother’s village, including the teachers of the local village school, had been rounded up by the Red Guards and were interrogated in the village square standing on the bottom of a stool or chair wearing top hats. A scene that his mother took as very sad. For example, Zhang Ruo started with a pig that stood on the legs of a stool with his eyes closed, so that it looked like he was thinking of something. Funny but also absurd. Later, Zhang Ruo added other animals to the series. Animals that are close to people. So close that their own living situation has almost disappeared. They must hold their own with a stable and elegant demeanor. It makes us hold up a mirror to the artist who thinks we can learn something from the animals in his images.

“Worker No. 2”

Laborer series(2011 – 2021)

‘This is a group of sculptures about the memories of my childhood life. It is a combination of metal sculptures and old objects, full of the breath of life.

I was born in an ordinary rural family in northern China. My ancestors have lived a life facing the loess and back to the sky for generations. Hard work has maintained a poor and simple life. When I was young, I followed the adults to work in the fields, which is the deepest memory of my childhood. . Walking on the natural land, you can smell the mud and hear the sounds of nature. Parents say you have to study hard, take university entrance exams in the future, and leave here; when I arrived in elementary school, the teacher said that knowledge changes destiny, and you have to make progress every day and leave here! Slowly, books became my object of labor.

One day, when I went to university, I studied more and more textbooks, which seemed to make sense, but I couldn’t understand it more and more. After graduating, I came to Beijing, engaged in artistic creation, and was as busy as the people here. What is the result of spiritual labor and material? People all need jobs, why? Is work destiny? Where is fate taking us? I don’t know, but I am sure that we can no longer stop, and we can’t go back to the past!’

Galerie Kunstbroeders has the last ‘Labour-No 2’ in her collection (8/8)

Wong Howe

NEW in our artist portfolio:

The talented young sculptor WONG HOWE

Born in 1984 in the Anhui Province(China).

Bachelor at the China Fine Academy of Art  of Sculpture  Department as well Master at the famous Japan Aichi Prefectural University. Participated in various group exhibitions in China.

Now for the first time in Europe. His bronze sculpture ‘Connected-2’ will be exhibited at the NAARDEN ART FAIR in March 2022.

This beautiful bronze could be placed in side and outside!

The story behind the ‘Connected’ sculptures:

The series aims to explore the complex relationship and connection between people.

Only two pieces of this series have been completed so far: ‘Connected- 1’ was inspired by the 1977 performance art work ‘Relation in Time’ by Marina Abramovic and his lover Uray, in which they tied each other’s hair together to explore the complex emotional relationship between men and women that both repulsive and attractive. They tried to become one, but found themselves ultimately forced to assume each other’s gender roles. Divided into two separate entities. ‘Connected-1’ strengthens the rigid and soft differences between men and women in form and texture through sculptural techniques, statically displaying conflicts and a sense of crisis.

In ‘Connected-2’ , two girls with the same hairstyle and clothes are bound together. They seem to be close but estranged. They stare in the same direction or object, showing sharpness and coldness under their soft and warm appearance. These days, women’s close friends are called in China “boudoir”. They are jealous and competitive with each other, which is part of the natural human nature but they love each others and stay tightly connected.

Gang Shan

Galerie-Information

Gallery Kunstbroeders specializes in contemporary Chinese artists

Thanks to our own explorations of China and the friendly relationships we have established with the Chinese art world, our gallery has built up an impressive art portfolio over the years.

In this way we were able to bring a large number of Chinese artists to the attention of the European public. Starting but also established talents that we like to give attention to in Soest.

Throughout the year, by appointment, we exhibit notable work by renowned Chinese sculptors such as  oa Gong Dong, Xie Aige, Wu Jia Hui, Zhang Yong and Ren Rong   and painters such as An Kun, Zhang Xiang Ming, Sheng Shaopeng, Wei Ping, Liao Zhenwu, Chen Jianfeng, Gang Shan and Hong Wai.

Since 2000, there has been a growing curiosity from the international community at the astonishing speed of China’s emergence into the world as one of the major players and a potential competitor to the US superpower. This situation will not only allow the international framework to reshape itself, but also make China more uncertain in terms of its social, cultural and political prospects. Thus, the world is shifting its attention to the young Chinese generation born in the early 1980s and growing up with the open and reform program. Their stance will be an important reference to China’s tangible future. As the most sensitive group of this generation, the creation of Chinese young artists is perhaps the parameter for foreseeing the future of China.

In the Chinese art world, one of the most obvious phenomena of the past year has been the coming of age of many young talented Chinese artists whose art practice is rearranging the conventional appreciation and perception dominated by the Western art establishment. This forces international commentators to re-examine the new art without prejudice. They no longer reflect back on the ideologically charged Western projection and imagination of China, but pay full attention to current social reality – to capture the nature of a changing and uncertain life and that contemporary Chinese art is sober.

On our site there are several of this generation of young promising artists such as: Chen Jun, Fang Shi Biao; Liu Yan, Liu Zheng, Na Wei, Zhang Ruo, Zhang Zhaoying and Zhenning Li. Unknown still in Europe but strongly emerging in our own country!

Galerie Kunstbroeders was founded in 2010 by Rijk Schipper who, after living in China for a number of years, wanted to share his passion for the country and art with the European public.
