Sonja Edle von Hoeßle and Herbert Mehler

The two artists were born in Hesse: Sonja Hoeßle was born in Wiesbaden in 1960 and graduated in Visual Communication in Mainz, while Herbert Mehler was born in Steinau near Fulda in 1949 and trained with his father, a master wood sculptor, and at the Academy of Fine Arts in Nuremberg. They deliberately do not see themselves as an artist couple, but have been working together since 2015 in the Erbachshof Eisingen not far from Würzburg as a studio community and are also jointly represented by the galleries Werner Tammen in Berlin and Bernd. A. Lausberg in Düsseldorf.

Herbert Mehler's amorphous steel sculptures allude to archaic primordial forms of nature: plants, blossoms, buds. "I believe," says Mehler, "that everyone carries within them a canon of archetypal forms that are anchored in human perception across cultures." His Corten steel sculptures, up to 2.5 metres high, radiate an apparent lightness, while other works up to 6 metres high have to be transported by cranes.

Sonja Hoeßle's sculptures made of the same material, on the other hand, are very open, changing with every change of location and perspective. Her works, which seem so delicate, combine material and transparency, construction and emotion.
