Stefan Gross

Stefan Gross, born in Bendorf Germany, apprenticed as a practitioner of stained glass manufacture. During his apprenticeship he was surrounded by coloured glass and learned to think in color. In 1988 he became a master of the practice and also concluded it by taking up studies of painting at art school HBK Saar, Saarbrücken. After his studies which he completed cum laude, he moved to the Netherlands. Here he lives and works, always seeking to develop new painting techniques. In ca. 2006 he developed a material of his own he now predominantly uses: "oil plastic". It results from dyeing an industrial plastic with classic oil paints. It is surface and paint in one and enables Stefan Gross to extend the painted surface three-dimensionally. "Oil plastic" is translucent and behaves, at a relatively low temperature, like glass. In his work, Stefan Gross depicts, in a colorful way, the fall of a society based on growth. "The world is a serious place these days. This is a problem I address in my work." He shows the beauty and potential of industrial production in a look back on the times in which we now live.

Monika Radhoff-Troll

Monika Radhoff-Troll

Monika Radhoff-Troll's work is primarily specialized and focused on installations, objects and photography. She creates installations, as her artistic vision is influenced by political and ecological concerns. While not desiring to confront the viewer with horrific real life scenario, nevertheless she wants to disturb viewers and heighten their sensibility by building alienated, distorted situations, pseudoscientific assemblages and installations with recycled material.

Monika studied art and textile design at RWTH Aachen / Fakultät VIII from 1978-83. Since 1987 she's working as an artist in Aachen. Work in public ownership are at Sparkasse Gelsenkirchen, Sparkasse Westmünsterland, Stadt Lohmar and Buxtehude, Kangaeru-Shirou kan Kawauchi mura, Fukushima, Japan, Geoje Haegeumgang Theme Museum, Yukyung Art Museum Geoje, South Korea and have been as a loan for four years at The Washington Post, Washington D.C., U.S.A.

Stephan Marienfeld

Stephan Marienfeld has transformed sculptural processes into his own language by altering the form and meaning of materials in an ingenious way. Born in 1966, this trained stone sculptor was a pupil and assistant of Tony Cragg for many years. In the meantime, he has earned himself a highly regarded position as a sculptor both in Germany and internationally while having taught as a lecturer at the Kunstakademie Essen since 2003.

His artistic breakthrough came with his group of works “Dislikes” . He is thereby not only represented in the renowned collection of the Museum Voorlinden in the sculpture park of the Dutch collector Joop van Caldenborgh, but his “Dislike” sculpture can also currently be seen outside the Palazzo Mora as part of the Venice Biennale.

Bound to the trunk of a tree with a rope, or fastened to a column or wall as “Wall Dislike” , Stephan Marienfeld’s “Dislikes” shine in particularly powerful colors. With their smoothly polished polyester and lacquer surfaces, they capture the reflections of their surroundings. They invariably provide an effective contrast to their environment. A term derived from the modern digital world, the title “Dislike” makes us ask who disliked whom here: support medium and object merge to form an artificial unity. This heterogeneity manifests itself as a sensual pleasure – not least through the perception of an interplay of forces.

Stephan Marienfeld is an artist of extraordinary curiosity, experimentation and productivity. He creates an impressive sculptural oeuvre, which is divided into distinct, yet mutually corresponding groups of works.

Ever since he started to mold objects in the early 2000s, cast them in metal or other materials and bind them with a tightly stretched rope, his works have been exposing conventional material properties as illusions. The result is a paradoxical, extremely stimulating mixture of fascination and disillusionment. As a cubic form cast in concrete and bound, his “Cubes” and “Wall Bondages” appear to be deformed or crumpled by the ropes like a sponge. They call into question our categories of perception.

Cast in various shapes, coated with polyester, lacquered and polished, with various surfaces such as bronze, high-gloss aluminum, concrete and a porcelain-like mass, Marienfeld’s works impress with their special tactile feel. The intensive treatment of the surface enables an interaction of light and shadow that is central to the effect of these works. The roundish objects, including the so-called “blow-ups” exert an associative effect, calling to mind biomorphic organic forms and the human nude as the central reference for sculpture since antiquity.

What all his works have in common is that they do not present a main viewing angle, but rather are free-standing objects in the round that fully aspire to be viewed from all sides. They draw attention to genuinely sculptural questions of volume and linearity.

Tension is made visible, subtly erotic implications are evoked. Bondage signifies coercion, subjugation, and also ‘sexual dependence’ – the title of this series of works is reminiscent of the American writer Somerset Maugham, who raises fundamental questions in his 1915 masterpiece novel “Of Human Bondage” that center around man’s restriction and lack of freedom. Somerset Maugham derived the title from Spinoza’s “Ethics”, which deals with ‘human servitude’. Spinoza understands this to mean man’s powerlessness against his inner and outer nature.

All of Stephan Marienfeld’s bound and unbound objects cf. the group of works “CANS” , “Hidden” and “Now” in their diverse variations seem mysterious to us. The observer is denied an inner glimpse beneath the surface – perhaps this is precisely what creates tension within us. To be sure, they are aesthetically convincing.

Mathijs Siemens (Amsterdam, 1982)

Growing up in a creative family, Mathijs Siemens (Amsterdam, 1982) was always busy making things. In his teenage years he made many drawings, developing in style, from street-art to more figurative and surrealistic drawings in his twenties. After the art academy he became more interested in architectural perspectives, and the function of colour and depth. In that period Mathijs Siemens began to work with different materials, such as resin, wood and foamboard and started adding 3-dimensional elements to his surrealistic artworks. Eventually the next logical thing for him was to free himself from all realistic boundaries and make the step towards abstract art.

For several years now he has been developing techniques in which cotton yarn is the most important material. By putting this fragile yarn under maximum tension, strong figurative compositions are created, whereby the space between the 2 and 3-dimensional is an exciting working field.

Placing layers of thread on top of each other and playing with lines, colours and reliefs brings his artwork to life.
He clearly wants to make colourful and positive work. Sometimes with an almost hallucinatory or kinetic effect, often with an architectural layering.

About us

Gallery profile

CHIEFS & SPIRITS
INTERNATIONAL ARTGallery Chiefs & Spirits was established in 1992. It provides a forum for international Artists from Africa, Europe, Asia and Americas. The primary goal is to bridge and create artistic borderlesness. The gallery is housed in a monumental building in the historical part of The Hague. It has two exhibition rooms. Apart from regular shows organized in the gallery, Chiefs & Spirits participates in national and international art fairs.
