Josef Albers

Josef Albers, German-American painter, art pedagogue, and teacher at the Bauhaus, emigrated to the USA after the National Socialists seized power in Germany and the Bauhaus closed in 1933. Albers took up a teaching post at the Black Mountain Collage. Influenced by the movement of Dutch "De Stijl" to the development of the "Abstract painting", he dealt with his perceptual theoretical considerations and contributions to color theory in painting through variations of the "Hommage to the Square" as well as with writing. His work in Abstract and Concrete Art had a great influence on the emergence of American color field painting and Op-Art. His students include Robert Rauschenberg and Richard Serra.

Christian Awe

Christian Awe's colorful works are on the brink of abstraction and figuration. The works of the student of Georg Baselitz and Daniel Richter embody the joy of experimenting and exploring artistic possibilities with a wide variety of painting materials and methods. His works are made by spraying, pouring, painting and jetting paint in a multitude of layers on top of each other. In intermediate steps, he repeatedly removes individual parts in order to expose underlying layers of paint like an archeology. The representations fluctuate between photorealistic representations of water surfaces and completely abstract colour explosions. His works open up a dialogue in which painting seeks to assert itself as an object in the environment of contemporary media, such as photography or digital art.

Ernst Wilhelm Nay

"I live the adventure of the white canvas." (EWN, 1953)

Ernst Wilhelm Nay was a master of colour and its movement on canvas. Starting from a representational early work influenced by Expressionism, he developed abstract groups of works after the Second World War that dealt with the effect of colour and form on canvas: This includes groups of works such as "Hekate Bilder" (1945-1948), "Fugale Bilder" (1949-1951), "Rhythmische Bilder" (1952-53), "Scheibenbilder" (1954-62) and "Augenbilder" (1963-64). His "Späte Bilder" (1965-68), painted in clear colours and outlines, complete the circle to the beginning of his career with their reminiscences of representationalism. He also dealt scientifically with the subject of colour. In 1955 he published "Vom Gestaltwert der Farbe", which met with a great response in the art world. He understood his works as "flat art," without foreground or background, with the aim of making the colour surfaces oscillate: positive colours strive forwards, negative colours recede. Nay's equally virtuoso works on paper can be understood as his "diaries", which allow exciting conclusions to be drawn about his working methods and development and document his high artistic standards.

Serge Poliakoff

Inspired by Wassily Kandinsky's reflections on music, including his publication "Über das Geistige in der Kunst" (1911), as well as by Sonia and Robert Delaunay's colour-theoretical works, Serge Poliakoff developed his own style in which clearly defined geometric colour forms create a kind of mosaic. His works, that are often titled "Composition Abstraite", have no relation to the world and completely dispense with a perspective depth effect. Rather, the individual colour fields strive forwards or backwards, depending on the intensity and characteristics of the colours and their arrangement within the composition. Poliakoff achieves a special depth of the individual colour fields through a multi-layered application of colour and the admixture of pure pigments, which allow the viewer to deepen contemplatively into these atmospheric works. His ouevre was honoured early on at documenta II (1959) and documenta III (1964), as well as at the Venice Biennale (1962).

Christopher Lehmpfuhl

Christopher Lehmpfuhl's work follows the tradition of the plein air painting of the German Impressionists by Max Slevogt or Max Liebermann. In the outdoor, the former master student of Klaus Fußmann creates his colourful landscapes and cityscapes, seeking direct contact with the forces of nature far away from romanticizing beauty. In 1998 he was awarded the GASAG Art Prize of the Berlinische Galerien. His works can be found in the Zentrum für Kunst und Medien, Karlsruhe, the Badisches Landesmuseum, Karlsruhe and the collection of the German Bundestag in Berlin.

Hermann Max Pechstein

Hermann Max Pechstein is a master at creating exciting and atmospheric images with his woodcut-like formal language reminiscent of African cult objects and his sometimes daring colour compositions. Already during his time with the artists' association "Brücke" (1906-1912) he was successful with his art and took part in large exhibitions. He often found his motifs outside, in free nature. Together with the other "Brücke" artists he painted nudes in the forest or at the lakes around Dresden. During his stays on the Curonian Spit in the artists' colony Nidden, he developed his preference for sea landscapes and one of his favourite motifs: boats. His paintings and watercolours, painted with concise brushstrokes, show the influences of Derain, Matisse, and above all Vincent van Gogh, whom the young Pechstein admired. Typical for the expressionist Pechstein are his bright colours, which he sets in an exciting contrast to each other in his paintings as well as in his works on paper.

Lesser Ury

Lesser Ury spent his childhood in Berlin. At the age of 26, the young man spent more than ten years in Europe until he finally returned to his hometown in 1887. The metropolis became his preferred artistic motif. Again and again Ury roamed his surroundings and captured urban life in all its splendour as a silent observer. At different times of the day, in the light of the glistening sun or in the darkness of the night, or under changing weather conditions, he would create numerous views of the metropolis and thus advanced to become one of the most important pioneers of German Impressionism. Ury, celebrated as a master of pastel technique, was a member of the Berlin Secession from 1914, and his works were exhibited in the leading galleries of Paul Cassirer and Heinrich Thannhauser.
