Juan Escudero

Bilbao, 1965

Juan Escudero graduated in Fine Arts from the University of the Basque Country in 1991 specializing in painting.

In 1993 he left painting to create a 3D animation company. In 2007 he returns to Art through drawing and in 2017 he focuses mainly on printmaking. Escudero resides i Barcelona since 1999

“To draw, I make it a condition that all marks are visible and no corrections are made. I apply a system in which a first line prefigures as the bottom line and if an irregularity occurs, it is transmitted to the next line. Similar processes occur in nature so the final artwork connects with familiar patterns and shapes such as surfaces, fabrics, fluids, orography, waves, etc. The basic idea of drawing is not to represent something, but to activate a process. It is similar to the automatic drawings we make unconsciously when we talk on the phone, a drawing like a musical improvisation.

«I see the matrix once finished with the size of the drawing already invariable and the idea frozen. Then the stamping processes begins with its dynamic movement crossing the plate with its richness of life.»

Miguel Macaya

Contemporary artist Miguel Macaya (b. 1964) is a Santander based in Barcelona who is often compared with Goya, Rembrandt and the great masters of Spanish tenebrist painting.

«Miguel Macaya looks at things as if they have just appeared inexplicably; He enters the studio at night and turns on the light and examines them as the Egyptologist who walks the lantern through an Egyptian crypt». - ANTONIO MUÑOZ MOLINA

"They have the universality of old and casual images, in which a car is all cars at once, and the snapshot of a criminal includes all criminals and all crimes." - EDUARDO MENDOZA

"Macaya never says too much, never too little." - DAPHNÉ TESÓN

"It is visible, and has been said on numerous occasions, what is the spiritual filiation of the paintings of Miguel Macaya. The baroque tenebristas, of course, but also Rembrandt, of which one remembers to the image of a bovine of profile. And, of course, especially a few months after the magnificent exhibition, the line that connects Velázquez, Goya and Manet». - PABLO LLORCA
