Artist details

Category: Contemporary Art

Damien Hirst (*1965)

The artist Damien Hirst belongs to the group of artists known as the „Young British Artists“ (YBAs) who rose to prominence in the late 1980s.

His works of art have a high recognition value. The YBAs include artists such as Tracy Emin and Marc Quinn.

Hirst studied at Goldsmiths College in London and made a name for himself as a sophomore in 1988 as organizer and curator of the FREEZE exhibition, which showcased the art of Young British Artists. With this exhibition, which took place in London’s waterfront, a new art phenomenon was born: YOUNG BRITISH ARTISTS. From the 1990s, Hirst himself became the most prominent of this group of artists. Through provocative sculptures such as the famous diamond-encrusted platinum cast of a human skull (2007) with the work title „For the Love of God“ or the huge formaldehyde shark in the glass aquarium, the photographs of his work and thus his name went around the world.

In his artistic work, Hirst often crosses the boundaries between pop culture, science and art.
The aesthetic potential of his works of art and the versatility of his subjects take up and expand the contemporary means of design. His works appeal to a broad, young and international collector public worldwide.

Damien Hirst is a collector himself

Since 2015 he has been showing exhibits by Bansky, Tracey Emin, Sarah Lucas, Gavin Turk and other well-known artists in his own art showroom and art museum in London. His art collection also includes works by Francis Bacon, Pablo Picasso and Jeff Koons. Damien Hirst repeatedly designs attractive exhibitions from the abundance of art objects and pictures in his collection, which comprises around 2000 exhibits.

For more in-depth reading of the artist’s work, we would like to take this opportunity to read Ulrich Blanché’s book “Damien Hirst. Gallery Art in a Material World” (Baden-Baden, 2018).

„Non Fungible Tokens (NFTs) Collection“

Damien Hirst is often a pioneer in contemporary art with the latest works of art – now he has the first „Non Fungible Tokens (NFTs) Collection“. The digital certificate (NFT) extends to a work of art and changes the art world through a „token“ (token). A non-fungible token is a non-exchangeable certificate. Damian Hirst lets the buyer of a work sometimes decide for himself whether he wants the sheet or whether Hirst burns the work of art in paper and the collector then brings it into his art collection as a digital certificate (Non-Fungible Token, NFT).

In 1995 the artist Damien Hirst received the coveted

Turner Prize and in the same year
the “Prix Eliette von Karajan”.

Numerous exhibitions made the artist known worldwide:

1988 – Freeze, London 1988
1992 – made for Arolsen, Bad Arolsen 1992
1997 – Sensation: Young British Artists from the Saatchi Collection, Royal Academy of Arts, London
2003 – Participation in the 50th Venice Biennale
2004 – In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida, Tate Britain, London
2005 – MFA, Boston 2005
2005 – Participation in the Prague Biennale 2, Prague
2007 – RE-OBJECT, Kunsthaus Bregenz, Bregenz
2008 Damien Hirst , Amsterdam Rijksmuseum
2010 – Paintings and Sculptures, Musée océanographique de Monaco, Monaco
2012 at the Tate Modern in London, which dedicated a “retrospective” to him.
2017 – Treasures from the Wreck of the Unbelievable, Venice

Jean-Michel Basquiat

The American artist Jean-Michel Basquiat was the first African American artist whose paintings and drawings were accepted by the white art world of his time.

Jean-Michel Basquiat’s works of art are very popular with international art collectors. They are counted among the most important works of art of the 20th century.

The Afro-American artist Jean-Michel Basquiat was one of the first artists whose paintings and drawings were accepted early on in the „white art world“.

Basquiat had American role models like Andy Warhol, Robert Rauschenberg, Jackson Pollock or Roy Lichtenstein among others he also studied Henri Matisse and Pablo Picasso.

Jean-Michel Basquiat’s works, which, due to their artistic immediacy, take place directly on the image carrier, are assigned to Neo-Expressionism through this way of working. They contain everything that Basquiat found in daily life and that he could quote in his works. We find signs, words, numbers, symbols, sketches, logos, map fragments and pictograms or

– as the artist Basquiat himself always emphasized – “facts”!

AND: Basquiat’s earlier pictorial ideas always flow back into his work – quotations from his own works appear. Every work of art by Jean-Michel Basquiat that you find in the Galerie Jeanne in downtown Munich always contains an approach from earlier works. The early collaboration with Andy Warhol is evident in many works of art.

Built up in layers, everything could remain with Basquiat’s works of art, or everything could be painted over again up to the fragmentary quotation.

In the history of art, viewers felt reminded of African folk art. Indeed, the artist Jean-Michel Basquiat brings together artifacts from his own lifetime in his works.

Jean-Michel Basquiat himself felt like „part of graffiti art“

The attempt to classify him as a „graffiti artist“ was not enough. Jean-Michel Basquiat himself felt himself to be “part of graffiti art”, which was typical of his time. The artist Basquiat’s self-image was not that of a painter, he saw himself as a “writer” and his works as notes of what he himself experienced, found and processed or of what was questioned. The art historiography of the eighties understood his art as graffiti art or neo-expressionism, which looks past the strongly content-bound and very meaningful, almost speaking works of the artist.

Basquiat was ahead of his time in artistic creation: everything he interpreted pictorially was the reality that he experienced and transferred to his image carrier.

MARC CHAGALL (1887-1985)

Marc Chagall
born in Liosno / Vitebsk district (Russia / Belarus) on July 7, 1887 – died on March 28, 1985 in Saint-Paul-de-Vence (France)

The French-Russian-Jewish artist (painter and graphic artist) Marc Chagall

… begins his artistic training in 1907. We found him in Paris as early as 1910, where he picked up the mood of the city and the styles of the artists. As a unique artist, Chagall later saw himself more and more as a painter of the Paris School

Marc Chagall studied among other things at the Petersburg Academy with Leo Bakst and traveled through France, Russia and America. Finally he found his new home in St. Paul de Vence (in France).

As a loner artist, Chagall left behind a unique life’s work

In 1910 the artist was impressed by the work of Henri Matisse, he came across Fauvism and Cubism when he visited the Salon de Indépandants. This is where styles come to the fore that will shape his work for decades.

In 1913 Chagall met the art dealer Herwarth Walden in Paris and was presented to the public with his first exhibition a year later.

In 1919 Marc Chagall ran an art school in his Russian homeland, Vitebsk.

We found the artist again in Berlin in 1920, where he took part in a joint exhibition of Russian artists in 1922.

The art dealer Paul Cassirer added Marc Chagall to his program and in 1922 brought out a series of etchings under the title “My Life”. This was followed in Paris in 1923 by book illustrations for Nikolai Gogol’s “Die toten Seelen” for Ambroise Vollard. The illustration and its series of images will shape the artist’s work well into old age.

Marc Chagall is one of the most important artists of Classical Modernism.

The graphic artist and painter achieved great popularity in the art world during his lifetime

His works are expressionistic in their narrative structure and show us a „painter-poet“. As a French artist, Chagall remains loyal to Russian folk art and combines it with “Jewish mythology”. Chagall remained caught up in the subject throughout his Russian homeland and its fairytale world.

In his dream worlds you will find winged creatures, rich flower bouquets and floating people and objects that are sometimes allowed to stand on their heads. Mythological animals, the crescent moon, the Eiffel Tower, circus tents or bridges as symbols of Paris appear again and again in his oeuvre.

Marc Chagall created a wealth of motif worlds

Recurring and newly interpreted motifs become metaphors in his works and override the laws of gravity.

Perspectives are possible, but they can also be exceeded marginally. The spatially impossible becomes possible in its color harmonies and gives each individual work a unique, new and radiant statement. Up until old age, Chagall developed new narrative strands in his usual narrative style.

The works of Marc Chagall presented in the Galerie Jeanne in Munich are popular with collectors and are still sought after today. With his unique world of images, Marc Chagall is one of the most important painters and graphic artists of the 20th century.

Marc Chagall’s work can be found in numerous large collections and museums around the world. Probably the largest Chagall collection is in the Chagall Museum in Nice!

Marc Chagall was a Franco-Russian painter who made Paris the center of his art.

JOAN MIRÓ (1893 - 1983)

The famous, Spanish Catalan Painter and Printmaker Joan Miró i Ferrà was born in Barcelona in 1893 and died in Palma de Mallorca in 1983.

Joan Miró took part in art studies at the “La Llotja” academy in Barcelona at a young age – in addition to his accountant training.

Joan Miró was one of the most celebrated artists of the last century

In 1941 was Miró’s first major museums retrospective at the Museum of Modern Art in New York.

He was an artist of international reach. Miró combined the abstract art with his own Surrealist fantasy.

The Joan Miró Foaundation in Barcelona has a great collection of 11.000 pieces – Paintings, Graphic Arts and other famous works by this artist.

Joan Miró – Biography

The Spanish-Catalan painter, graphic artist, sculptor and ceramicist Joan Miró is one of the leading artists, yes one of the main representatives of Surrealism. Miró is also known as the „pioneer of modernity“. He was one of the pioneering artists into abstract expressionism. Miró was always looking for the – for him – correct formal language in art.

His Spanish artist colleague Pablo Picasso praised Joan Miró as his successor in surrealism.

Miro already took up the phases of Cubism, Dadaism and Fauvism in his early works. His art teacher Francesc Galí quickly discovered Miró’s unique artistic talent. Joan Miró trained his eye on the work of Antoni Gaudi and on „Catalan Modernism“.

Joan Miró was constantly on the lookout for new means of expression in his artistic work and found good ideas givers in Francis Picabia, who confronted him with Dadaism, and in Guillaume Apollinaire, who impressed Miro with the surrealism of his “pictorial poems”.

The Catalan artist Joan Miró stayed frequently in Paris, where he made numerous artist friendships. His friendships with Pablo Picasso, Hans Arp, André Breton or Alexander Calder and Alberto Giacometti are legendary.

As an artist of Classical Modernism, Joan Miró was among the first to move away from representationalism

In his motifs, the imagination seems to triumph and symbols such as stars, moon, bird, number or woman are gaining in importance; they are simplified to symbolic elements and thereby acquire a magical, speaking character.

After 1945 Miró visited the U.S.A. several times and got to know artists such as Clement Greenberg and Jackson Pollock.

The graphic work of Joan Miró still gives evidence of the refreshing and sometimes colorful uniqueness in his artistic work. In his imaginative compositions, Miró also visualized the sounds of the music, for example, and in some works suggests the calligraphy of the Asian region.

Joan Miró is exhibited as an artist in international collections and museums to this day.

Pablo Picasso

Pablo Ruiz Picasso (1881 Spain – 1973 France)

The Spanish painter, sculptor and graphic artist Pablo Picasso left behind a comprehensive oeuvre of drawings, graphics, collages, paintings, ceramics and sculptures. Picasso’s best-known works include the paintings “Demoiselles d’Avignon” (1907) and “Guernica” (1937) – as key works of Classical Modernism – as an artistic exploration of the Spanish Civil War.

Picasso was born in Malaga in 1881. In 1895 the family moved to Barcelona. At the age of 14 he passed the admission to the art academy “La Llotja” and was allowed to skip two classes. After only a year he moved into a joint studio with Manuel Pallarès.

In 1897 Picasso went to Madrid to study at the „Royal Academy of San Fernando“.

Since 1897/98 he signed instead of RUIZ for the first time with “P. Picasso“

The Prado and the artist’s bars in the capital became his school.

In 1900 Picasso had his first exhibition entitled „Els Quatre Gats“. In the same year he traveled with Casagemas to the world exhibition in Paris, where the works of Edgar Degas, Paul Cézanne, and Pierre Bonnard could be seen. From then on, the artist shared a studio with Casagemas here – in Montmatre, 49 Rue Gabrielle. City life and the works of Toulouse-Lautrec influenced his work during this period.

Back in Madrid, Picasso published the art magazine “Arte Joven” as an illustrator together with the writer Francisco de Assis Soler.

When he returned to Paris, he found his first art dealer in Pere Manach and his first gallery owner in Berthe. The publisher Amboise Vollard is showing his works for the first time in an exhibition – the pink and blue periods are on display.

Between 1930 and 1937 the “Suite Vollard” was created – a series of 100 graphics

… including the Minotaur motif and the artist and model theme. Since 2001 a complete series can be found in the „Pablo Picasso Graphics Museum“ in Münster.

In 1968 Picasso devoted himself to different series of etchings:

„Painter and Model“
and „The Reclining“
as well as etchings on the subjects of bullfighting, circus
and equally erotic works

Picasso’s work can be found in well-known museums and collections around the world

Picasso Museum, Paris
Lille Métropole Museum of Modern Art
Pushkin Museum, Moscow
Hermitage, Stankt Petersburg
Museo Reina Sofia, Madrid
Museum of Modern Art, New York
Art Institute of Chicago
Museo Picasso, Málaga

Two museums were dedicated to Picasso’s artistic genius during his lifetime:

Museu Picasso, Barcelona
Picasso Museum, Antibes

Manolo Valdés (* 1942)

The Spanish artist Manolo Valdés (b. 1942 in Valencia) studied for two years – from 1956 to 1958 – in Valencia at the „Academy of Fine Arts / Real Academia de Bellas Artes“. He left the academy to finally work freely and create artworks.

Manolo Valdés was one of the co-founders of the Spanish „Pop Art“ group „Equipo Crónica“ (founded in 1964) with Juan Antonia Toledo. establish kind.

Within the artist group „Equipo Crónica“ Valdés developed his artistic language, which quotes and strives for the open air

As in a nod to art history, Manolo Valdés sometimes refers to Greek historiography, sometimes to Jan van Eyck (1390-1441), sometimes to Henry Matisse (1869-1954), sometimes to Pablo Picasso (1881-1973) or sometimes to Roy Lichtenstein (1923-1997) and Andy Warhol (1928-1987).

As in the 2001 lithograph and collage on paper board ‚Reina Mariana V Tribute to Lichtenstein‘, which is currently for sale at Galerie Jeanne in Munich (see image above).

A portion of irony and humor always resonates in his work when – as in the example mentioned – the portrait of „Queen Doña Mariana of Austria“ from a classic work by Diego Velázquez (1599-1660) is broken down into a construction drawing then to collage the smallest fragments from the work „Girl with Hair Band“ by the pop artist Roy Lichtenstein (1923-1997).

Manolo Valdés fragmentarily dissects the great works of art history and often only extracts a detail for his newly interpreted statements and appealing pop art compositions.

As a painter, sculptor and graphic artist, Manolo Valdés established a completely new artistic language

In his compositions and new interpretations, the pop art artist repeatedly draws on works from art history and likes to draw on the renowned artists of his home country. Image sections, outline drawings and portraits are included in their own compositions as outlines. In Valdés pop art, everything appears new and yet rooted in what already exists.

Manolo Valdés‘ collages become sculptural experiences, so to speak, thanks to all kinds of materials used.

Manolo Valdés is an internationally renowned artist whose artworks can be seen in many of the world’s most famous public art collections and museums (selection):

Reina Sofia, Madrid,
Museum of Modern Art, New York,
National Museum of China, Beijing,
Center Georges Pompidou, Paris
….

Manolo Valdé’s collages, paintings and etchings brought the internationally sought-after artist numerous prizes

Silver Medal / Biennale, Tokyo,
Alfons Roig Prize, Valencia,
Spanish State Prize,
Officier de L’Ordre National du Merite, Paris

Manolo Valdés now lives part-time in Madrid and in New York.

Andy Warhol declared screen printing to be an art medium (Silk screen) and duplication received a new technique in art history

As a successful advertising illustrator, he gave new input to the pop art movement through his screen prints.

Andy Warhol was shown at the 4th documenta (1968), the 6th documenta (1977) and the 7th documenta (1982) in Kassel. Since Warhol presented the United States of America pavilion at the Venice art event (the Biennale) in 1976, he had established himself as the most important artist of his time.

The works of Andy Warhol can be found in important international museums and private collections:

The exhibition „Andy Warhol – Pop Art Identities“ in the large exhibition and event hall of a former Dresden factory ends on June 12, 2022

As an artist, filmmaker, and publisher, Warhol expanded his genre and career, which began in 1950 as a graphic designer and illustrator for fashion and lifestyle magazines. From 1945 to 1949 he had studied commercial art at the Carnegie Institute of Technology in Pittsburgh, now Carnegie Mellon University. He had degrees in painting and design. paintings and screenprints.

Warhol concentrated on pop culture subjects, Hollywood stars, comic and cartoon motifs such as Mickey Mouse, Popeye and Superman. Initially drawn by hand, screen printing soon became his technique. As a result, the artist distanced himself from the abstract expressionism of his time and from action painting. And he carried the spirit of his time, because Roy Lichtenstein and Robert Rauschenberg had also discovered these motifs for themselves.

In June 2022, the Rolling Stones had their concert in Munich (Germany). Mick Jagger shows the work of Andy Warhol (1928 – 1987) at the exhibition stand of Galerie Jeanne from Munich in a serial print on Arches Aquarelle handmade paper.

It was created in 1975 in an edition of 250 and was personally signed and numbered by Mick Jagger and Andy Warhol. His New York studio and the legendary „Factory“ have cult status. Warhol focused on pop culture subjects, Hollywood stars, comic and cartoon motifs. Initially drawn by hand, screen printing soon became his technique. This distanced the artist from the Abstract Expressionism of his time and from Action Painting. He hit the nerve of his time, because Roy Lichtenstein and Robert Rauschenberg had also discovered these motifs for themselves.
