Karl Stengel

Born in Neusatz in 1925, Karl Stengel was a Russian prisoner during the Second World War. His love for drawing and painting also accompanied him during his captivity in Soviet camps.
In Munich he attended the Academy of Fine Arts and later became an art teacher, dedicating his whole life to painting and spending time in Tuscany where he died in 2017.
Stengel’s artistic career is divided between works on paper and large canvases painted in acrylic. His generally abstract works present a single guiding thread: large shiny surfaces of colour that stand out on the canvas, on which the typical Stengelian figure develops, the same shape that imposes itself on an imaginary theatrical scenario. Other works of the musical series still have traces of musical scores and were influenced by the composers that the artist listened to while working in his studio.
In order to preserve and diffuse the artist’s work, Palazzo Rosselli del Turco in Florence hosts a permanent collection.

About us

Gallery profile

Immaginaria has been active for more than twenty years in Florence, specializing in the promotion of artistic expression such as classic abstraction and the informal contemporary, hosting not only well known artists but also emerging artists, and presenting their works at important exhibitions both in Italy and abroad.

«The aim of the space is to give value to time, taking it away from the increasingly bewildered rhythm of everyday life. The space is the means to get to know and explore different worlds communicating and cooperating to enhance the intensity and quality of our experiences».

A meeting place and hangout offering friendship and hospitality providing vivacious dialogue and the comparison of ideas, Immaginaria has been and will continue to be a theatre of events dedicated to art, literature, music, organizing exhibitions, book presentations, live performances and tasting.

Galleria Immaginaria is opening Open Space in an ancient building located in Florence's historic center, at Via del Trebbio 14 rosso, which will house the archive with a permanent exhibition of works of art, but also serve as a large and evocative venue for exhibitions, concerts, and book presentations, all related to the visual arts and the promotion of culture.

We have found our second home in this space: a space designed to preserve and showcase the works collected over more than thirty-five years of Galleria Immaginaria's history, a living archive, but also an open place, a laboratory for encounters and ideas.

It will be inaugurated by Domenica Regazzoni, an artist who has already been featured in previous exhibitions at the Via Guelfa location, a symbol of continuity and renewal. But this space aims to go beyond exhibition: cultural events, musical and literary appointments will take shape here, such as those that enlivened last summer in Florence.

The result is a multipurpose center, a place of art and culture, where works of art dialogue with words and sounds, and every encounter becomes a fragment of our shared history.
